In its Global Human Capital Trends report Deloitte names "building global leadership" as "by far the most urgent". A true 21st Century leader has to be capable of communicating, interacting and relating across any unfamiliar culture,  whether it is organizational, national, ethnic or generational. Global Leaders may greatly benefit of the advice of a skilled Culture Influencer. 

COSMIN GHEORGHE IS a Certified Cultural Intelligence Facilitator and a Leadership Coach, with over a decade experience coaching and consulting. 
Throughout his professional career,  Cosmin has focused on human interactions: first, as medical doctor; then as an executive coach and psychotherapist; and now as an Multicultural Intelligence and Global Leadership Adviser. There is an obvious common thread here: Cosmin has been applying his skills and knowledge to help people and organizations to "become more and more themselves"*.

    Multicultural Environments

    Cosmin has lived, worked and traveled in over 25 cultures. It definitely helps that he speaks, reads and writes in four languages.  Being able to understand and engage with the values, symbols, social rituals and heroes of another culture is a gratifying and humbling experience. 
    Cosmin speaks English, French, Romanian and Spanish and has some knowledge of another two languages (Russian and Italian). The multicultural environment he has to "confront" on a daily basis is his own family, spread on three continents and five countries. In addition, it turns out that at the school where his child goes, 90% of the children have parents belonging to two different cultures and/or races.

    Global Leadership

    Cosmin's Leadership Coaching is based on a comprehensive intelligence model. He has added Cultural Intelligence (CQ) to the previously known forms of intelligence (IQ, EQ, PQ).  Technology and Entrepreneurship have transformed leadership and globalization into a very complex process, which goes way beyond "conquering" new markets.

    Multicultural networks (real and virtual) and multiple feedback social systems have changed the way leaders communicate and relate to power, risk, individuality, team work, negotiations. 
    The secret of development, be it political or economic, is that it never comes from outsiders, but from people belonging to that specific culture or country (Francis Fukuyama). The 21st Century authentic Global Leader needs to combine knowledge and several types if intelligence in a cocktail of skills that includes: empathy, trust, clarity, mindfulness, humbleness, aesthetic distance, and genuine listening.

    Human Interaction

    As an expert in human interactions Cosmin observes how people think, feel, make decisions and relate to other people and their environment. Individuals, groups, organizations are seen as social and cultural systems. Their interaction is seen as a series of encounters and separations, with the ultimate purpose of delineating or reinforcing moral circles. 
    Cosmin's human interaction expertise is informed by his degrees in Medicine and Psychology, as well as by his 10+ years experience as a psychotherapist and executive coach. He periodically refreshes his knowledge by attending classes like Stanford's Design Thinking and Technology Entrepreneurship, or Google's Analytics Fundamentals. "Since a good portion of my clients are high-tech/bio-tech companies, I thought that it is important to learn first hand some of the challenges the entrepreneurs experience", says Cosmin. One of Cosmin's most used consulting tool is Systems Theory: humans, events, objects are organized in categories called systems, which relate to each other through numerous feedback loops, creating or reinforcing what anthropologists call a Moral Circle.

    Aesthetic Distance

    Aesthetic Distance might sound very fancy, but in fact it is a simple concept, used by executives, public speakers, actors, mediators, negotiators. Cosmin uses it to assess and coach people to increase their Leadership skills and Cultural Intelligence Quotient. When acting in a multicultural setting, success is achieved when each participant is able to remain himself or herself, while at the same time has the ability to adapt and respond optimally to the others' cultural particularities. This is in fact the definition of what I call Intercultural Aesthetic Distance.  
    When collaborating with individuals belonging to a different culture, the maximum of success is achieved when each participant is able to remain himself or herself, while at the same time has the ability to respond optimally to the others' cultural particularities. This is in fact the definition of what I call Intercultural Aesthetic Distance. Cultural Identity is rooted mostly in the subconscious. Since we are immersed in our culture, we are unconsciously absorbing its values and appropriating its symbols and meanings. An effective understanding of our and others' cultural identity is possible only through a process of psychological distancing, which places us at aesthetic distance. As a result, we are able to be, simultaneously, both observers and "actors" in a multicultural setting.

    Cultural Intelligence is the capability to function effectively across national, ethnic and organizational cultures (Ang & Van Dyne, Handbook of Cultural Intelligence). Some outcomes of CQ coaching include: global identity, integrative negotiations, intercultural decision making, team satisfaction & cohesion, expatriate performance, team and leader effectiveness.
